Environmental War Crimes in Russia’s War against Ukraine with Marie G. Jacobsson

In the first GROMADA lecture, Ambassador Marie G. Jacobsson from Sweden sets the scene by introducing the topic and several initiatives on the topic on the international level.

Since 2014, Ukraine has documented environmental damage from the Russian aggression. Marie Jacobsson explore with the audience the legality of environmental destruction in armed conflicts, discussing responsibility and restoration. She covered the UN International Law Commission’s principles and a rising trend of individuals seeking compensation based on human rights, environmental, and civil law. The High-Level Working Group’s report on the Environmental Consequences of the War (presented on February 1, 2024) was also discussed.
